Zen massage?
So let me take a little of the mystery out of the “zen” part of this practice. There will not be any incense burning nor will I be chanting anything. I often play some soothing non-tonal music, but you are free to offer other relaxing musical options. This massage is really a partnership between you and me. You breathe, and I breathe with you, offering my body weight and gravity to provide pressure to your body along the meridians as defined by Chinese medicine, among others. I use gentle to firm pressure (mostly by heel of my hand and my thumbs). This is a deep massage, but not as deep as a deep tissue massage. The “zen” part is really in how we are all connected. I have been meditating informally for many years, but have been attending morning meditations at the San Francisco Zen Center two or three times a week since July 2009, integrating this spirit into my shiatsu. I can also tailor a massage of mixed modalities performed on a table.
“In shiatsu, giver and receiver create a warm and understanding human
relationship through touch and body pressure and become sensitive to each other.”
- Shizuto Masunaga, founder of Zen Shiatsu
