Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about zen shiatsu

Is there a lot of deep pressure in zen shiatsu?

-There is a reasonable amount of pressure involved in your massage. I work in an area to loosen up your muscles before going a little deeper later with palm and, often, thumb pressure. Areas with injuries or extra soreness will be treated gently or avoided - please inform me of any.

Am I going to be naked on a table?

-My zen shiatsu massage is ideally performed on a mat on the floor. Shiatsu is best done wearing a long sleeve shirt on top, and pajama bottoms, sweats or yoga pants.  Material not too thick or too baggy is preferable. See my massage basics for more information on preparing for your massage.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

-This is a healing massage and must remain a safe space for you and for me. My zen shiatsu massage is very comprehensive, following the Chinese meridians which run throughout your body. Recognizing you are in a safe space and communicating with me during your massage will assure you a comfortable experience.

What is so “zen” about this massage?

-This massage is really a partnership between you and me. You breathe, and I breathe with you, offering my body weight and gravity to provide pressure to your body. In this session we move and breathe as one, recognizing the buddha inside us all. See my zen massage page for more information on my work.

Does “zen” mean you will be chanting or burning incense or bowing?

- I will not be chanting or burning incense unless requested (but I am not generally a big fan of strong scents). I will be bowing towards you, moving my body weight inwards to your body. I often play some soothing non-tonal music, but you are free to offer other relaxing musical options. See my zen massage page for more information on my work.

How long does it take?

My full zen massage routine takes about two hours, sometimes a bit more or less. I generally book appointments in the following increments:

• 45 minute massage

• 60 minute massage (1 hr)

• 90 minute massage (1.5 hrs)

• 120 minute massage (2 hrs)

Can I eat before my massage?

- Try to avoid eating or excess drinking for two to three hours prior to a massage. Coming to a massage under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is highly discouraged. See my massage basics for more information on preparing for your massage.

How do I prepare for my massage?

- Please be clean. Avoid smoking, makeup, perfumes, colognes, and noticeable fragrances. Please also keep your clothes and feet fresh. Shiatsu is best done wearing a long sleeve shirt on top, and pajama bottoms, sweats or yoga pants.  Material not too thick or too baggy is preferable. See my massage basics for more information on preparing for your massage.

What if I unintentionally burp, pass gas, become sexually aroused or exhibit any other embarrassing bodily function?

- These are all normal responses to touch and the release of tension and stress. This is a safe and healing space and I will not be shocked or offended.

Is there anything I should do after the massage?

  1. -Take it easy and drink plenty of water. Shiatsu massage can leave you feeling energetic, or thoroughly relaxed. It is best to limit your activities immediately after your massage so that you can enjoy the renewed energy flow.
